Concerns :07/12/2014. 'Soliloquy'.
'Soliloquy'.
_____________
"I want to die"
"Do you know what this means?"
"No, ... Please tell!"
"Well, do you want to smoke?"
"Yes, I do want to, ... "
Saying so he lit a cigarette.
"That means you wanted the experience of smoking."
"Yes,..."
"Now, if you say you want to die, could you experience the death in the same way as you knew the experience of smoking a cigarette, and went through this experience?"
"Yes, I see your point."
"O.K. Then let us see this way ;
Is it that really you want to forget all recognition only, but not to die, because you never had that experience in the first place. May be, though you want to live on, perhaps you don't know how to put aside your memory, and if it is possible!"
"Forgetfulness?"
"Yes, you want to go beyond memory."
"Yes, Precisely this only."
"What prevents you from doing this?"
"First, I am unable to do this, and Secondly, I am scared of losing my memory."
"Is not this fear itself again only a part of the memory?"
"Oh yes, Thanks very much!"
"Is not this fear a by-product of the memory?"
"Yes, ..."
"Is not this fear irrational and baseless? And when you can voluntarily discard and disregard all the memory, isn't this also gets discarded with that? Are you then dead?"
"No, on the contrary I am immensely, extremely alive, ... I am the very Life only then! I can see this, but how to attain that state?"
"Well, Just see the absurdity and the limitation of the memory, and you have done."
"So there is a useful memory that spontaneously helps us in dealing with the day to day life, and need not be discarded, but at the same time there is the memory which causes irrelevant, irrational fears, doubts, conflicts, which needs to be scrutinized and should be got rid of."

Dedicated to Bhagavan Mahakala (Shiva),
The Presiding Lord at Ujjain,
Worshipped as
Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva,
Where Shiva was Seen by the devotees in the form of a column of Light,
= 'Jyotirlinga'.
--
Proceeds forth thus Mahakaala,
Beating and playing upon the drum,
Of 'kaala' - the time,
Walking along the lanes,
Made and traversed by the people unknown,
Forgotten since times immemorial,
Though unseen ever by them,
He keeps on walking along.
Though they see the paths,
They see the marks of His steps,
The ways He goes along,
They never get a glance of Him.
Though they follow His foot-marks,
He alone walks ahead,
Before them unseen ever by them.
And yet He never goes anywhere,
For He has no destination,
Though He alone is,
The Destination of all,
Even if they know or they don't.
And they keep on following Him.
His smile creates this world,
Of labyrinthine distances,
Of memories and forgetfulness,
And people all are though mesmerized,
He never utters a word,
Why, or to what purpose.
Asleep in deep solemn sovereign peace,
No one knows the secret,
Held by Him in His chest,
Rare-one is such a soul,
Who smiles like-wise Him.
Rare-one such a man,
Who knows quite well for sure,
The secret hidden in His Heart,
Such a one, One like Him.

Some flights are critical.
Me:
Flight of the fancy,or of the real,
Take sure you to your goal ideal.
One has to take-up both of them,
One has to make efforts vital.
He:
You are not aware of how simply and greatly you have just shown me the path ahead. Many Thanks!
Me:
See, By the way I knew fully well what I wrote, because during composition, I interchanged the words 'ideal' and 'real',

Have a wonderful day ahead!

Some sicknesses are to be kept hidden,
Some are to be shared with friends,
Some are to be enjoyed secretly alone,
Some are there to be cursed and blamed.
Be it religion, politics, tradition or belief,
Intellectual, sentimental, emotional relief,
All sicknesses need to be attended well,
Do this and stay healthy and cured always.

Talking to Friends.
Talking to Friends :
--
Talking to friends is like talking to oneself,
In harmony, in freedom, in peace, in a big joy.
Talking to friends is like walking in the woods,
In morning sunshine, in cool air, in open skies.
Talking to friends is like singing the song of heart and love,
In great music, in tone and in tune,
Talking to friends is like walking the lanes of life,
In sweet memories, in old times.

Who can ever harm,
The One who is one,
With all other beings,
As if really no one?
Who can ever harm,
A loving care and charm,
Who is not the 'other',
But the alone one?
Water harms not the water,
Fire harms not the Fire,
Though they merge in love,
And are seen as different.
The truth the spirit of water,
The water the spirit of fire,
The Fire the truth of spirit,
No one harms the other.
He is Rudra the Shiva,
She is Bhavani the Kali,
They are but One in two,
They are but two in One.

A new discussion. 'Ideology' and 'Religion'.
'Ideology' and 'Religion'.
______________________

Good Morning!
Today's tweet @vinayvaidya111
The crucial challenge before humanity is : Could we distinguish between 'ideology' and 'religion'. How much and in what way are they related?
--
And the same is there on my face-book wall.
And I have added this comment :
Ideology is the beginning of political thought. Religion is the practicing of the acquired traditions
(and of course, 'faith' is also included to a less or more extent in this). Whole humanity is divided on these two features of society. And I think there is no exception to this, almost all who are followers of a certain ideology are 'divided' on the religious lines. And at the same time, almost all who follow a particular 'religion' are 'divided' into the groups of different ideologies.

Zbigniew Herbert : "I would like to Describe..."
Zbigniew Herbert : "I would like to Describe..."
--
I would like to Describe,
joy or sadness
But not as others do
reaching for shafts of rains or sun
I would like to describe a light
which is being born in me
but I know it does not resemble
any star
for it is not so bright
not so pure
and is uncertain
I would like to describe courage
without dragging behind me a dusty lion
and also anxiety
without shaking a glass full of water
to put it another way
I would give all metaphors
in return for one word
drawn out of my breast like a rib
for one word contained within the boundaries of my skin
but apparently this is not possible
and just to say -- I love
I run around like mad
picking up handful of birds
and my tenderness
which after all is not made of water
asks the water for a face
and anger
different from fire
borrows from it a loquacious tongue
so is blurred
so is blurred
in me
what white haired gentle means
Separated once and for all
and said
this in the subject
this is the object
we fall asleep
with one hand under our head
and the other in a mound of planets
our feet abandon us
and taste the earth
with their tiny roots
which next morning
we tear out painfully
--
(Zbignew Herbert)

Commentary :
When I first read this poem on Face-book, I wrote in my comment on Anuj Agrawal's page :
" This poem of Zbigniew Herbert is a hard evidence that there are Truth / Reality could be described / expressed in ways not adhering to Traditional jargon also.... "
Then, while checking for the correctness of the text, I read it again on poemhunter.com. This website asked me if I 'liked' this poem? Well! I said 'yes'. Then it asked me what category you would put this poem into?
"Mysticism"
I suggested. Then I checked for the 'Dictionary-meaning' of the word. In OED (Advanced Learners 1995 Ed., India), I found this as :
n.[U] the belief that knowledge of God and of real truth may be reached by directing one's mind or through spiritual insight(1a) independently of reason and the senses:...
I agreed with this ad hoc definition of the word.
Upon this basis of the term, I start this commentary with the conviction that the poet has the first-hand revelation of the 'truth' / Reality which is the 'subject-matter' of Upanishads.
This 'subject' he likes to give the name 'love'. Keeping focused on this 'truth' he is going to describe many things. Like 'joy or sadness' 'a light'.
He says, not in a way others describe 'reaching for shafts of rains or sun'. His insight is not so bright as a star, and is 'uncertain'. That is the way our intellect starts with. In confusion, in fog (blurred vision). He would like to describe 'courage' of 'just being oneself', 'without dragging behind me a dusty lion'. His 'courage is not a defense-mechanism, but of a kind of accepting the Reality of being. And he would like to describe 'anxiety without shaking a glass full of water'.
And in a straightforward way he describes his understanding of 'truth' / 'Reality in a single word and in return of the word that emerged out from his very heart, like a rib of the breast, he is ready to forsake all metaphors. '...for one word contained within the boundaries of my skin. -needs no explanation. '...and anger different from fire borrows from it a loquacious tongue.' Handful of birds (the feelings and sentiments associated with love)
All these (joy, sadness, courage, anger are so mixed up / muddled up in 'me' I see them in their blurred image only)
And what white haired gentle means
Separated once and for all
and said
this in the subject
this is the object,
...
White-haired -An old man of wisdom / wise one.
Who 'Separated once and for all'
And said :
this in the subject
this is the object,
These two lines are the core-teaching of all Vedanta. There is a Sanskrit treaty 'दृक् - दृश्य विवेक' 'drik-drishya viveka', ascribed to Adi Shankaracharya, And deals with this theme. The whole study of Vedanta revolves around this theme (not a concept, but a hint). And there are mainly 4 schools of Vedantik thought namely 'shuddha-advaita', 'advaita', 'dvaita-advaita', 'vishishtadvaita', which deal with this fundamental theme in various ways. They are not contradictory, but true in their own way.
this in the subject
this is the object,
--
The subject is substratum / noumenon, while the object is phenomenon. And the object is 'in' the subject.
Then the poet describes the state of sleep, when we enter the dream-state and the deep-sleep state, and return to our pristine state of being beyond deep sleep (turiya in vedanta). Though we wake-up, and do have a delicate memory of the bliss we were one with during that state, this soon fades away and we are back to the state of routine confusuon.
--
Conclusion :
This poem beautifully narrates the journey of the soul towards the source / the ever-abiding truth / Reality.

Tomorrow again,
The clock will show the same.
Everyday this happens precisely at this moment.
Punctually and meticulously.
Be it in a working condition,

So, what is new there?
Nothing, but isn't this amazing?"

This Diwali, ...(poem)
This Diwali,
©
Sounds of doom hitting the earth,
Crackers are rocketing the sky,
People keep trying to celebrate joy,
But why then the laughs turn into cry!
Let's Seek and find, give real love,
Hope this diwali, no more we lie!
Life is not a festival of a day or two,
But of love alive till the day we die!
Keeping pure the earth, air and water,
flora and fauna, let the spirit soar high!
Rejoicing in peace,in harmony with nature,
Let love bind us each, with each-other and all.

श्रीमद्भग्वद्गीता / śrīmadbhagvadgītā 8.1
श्रीमद्भग्वद्गीता / śrīmadbhagvadgītā

I was / am a bright student of Sanskrit and Mathematics.
After post-Graduation (M.Sc.) in 1977, wanted to do research-work in Mathematics, but had to do a bank-job because of the compulsions of livelihood.
I often think Vedanta and śrīmadbhagvadgītā in a 'mathematical vein'.
Accordingly, yesterday I discovered a new way of representing the following text ( śloka 1 of Chapter 8) of This text.
Though you can view this on my regular Gita Blog, I am giving a preview here also.

This day every year,
Reminds me,
I am / was never born.
It is the thought,
That is born and wears out,
In a moment,
Like a rose,.
That Blooms, flowers, and withers away,
Spreading out beauty and fragrance,
Of its delicate fragile existence,
Spreading joy and happiness,
In the mean-while,
Reminds me,
I am / was never born,
Though the body and the world are born,
Like a flower,
With the thorns surrounding,
In the consciousness,
That is / was never born.
This thought, that emerges out,
And submerges again and again,
Reminds me,
I am the consciousness,
The ground where this delicate flower blooms,
I AM The Consciousness,
That is / was never born nor dies,
But abides and sports for ever,
As me and the world,
I AM THAT.

Just now read a brief biography of George Boole, the famous mathematician of wonderful accomplishments. Certainly a genius extra-ordinary.
And a question came up in the mind, like (a) thought that keeps up appearing and disappearing.
Could thought possibly operate upon itself? Is not thought ignorance that looks like knowledge? Is not thought delusion? Is not thought evaluation, formulation? Is not thought distraction? Thought functions within the ambit of the known. How can thought transcend itself? Thought is its own shadow, formed in the light of consciousness. It is only when the thought, tired of its own restlessness sits silent on its own, that the light of the consciousness is seen, that swallows the thought along-with the shadow.

These few days have been hot, hard and difficult, though not boring or idle.
Made 2 friends. Shri Alok Dixit and Dr. Amritanshu on Twitter
Alok Dixit was already an old friend, but came to know of Dr Amritanshu, through Alok ji.
Both are Social Activist, as is the info is given in their profiles.
A year or 2 ago, I knew Alok ji. He (through a fellow blogger Shri Chirag Joshi) had invited me to attend a meeting here at Ujjain where they had some social cause to be discussed. I think, it was about the freedom of expression, speech, and control and monitoring of the media / web. by the Government.
Then I learnt something more about him (Alok ji).
I don't watch TV just because I don't have one.
I could somehow afford only a desk-top and that too sometimes gives way.
Then I read details (on B.B.C.) about How Alok ji is sincere and seriously devoted and committed to his ideals and the way we could 'change' the society.
Here I see He tells his point by way of doing the right thing himself and thus by the example that leaves an impact. I also remember the oft-repeated statement said to have been given by no less that Mahatma Gandhi :
"Be the change you want to bring in the world."

Things matter.
There are social-activists and then there are active-socialists.
The former deal with the change and begin with them-selves.
The later had some other motives and interests, to walk-up some ladder of ambition and they them-selves don't become the instrument of change.
Rather they use political and social ideals as the instruments to bolster up their petty aims.

Hats off Alok ji !!

Concerns : chaitra navarAtra - 2014.
During 1991, from Feb. to Dec. and 2 next months in 1992, I was living in an ashram in OmkAreshvara.
There was also a lady named Madhu didi, living in the same Ashrama. This was an evening of June month. The Ashrama had no regular electric facility and the Narmada-bank where this ashram is situated is hilly, and fear-some. There were many wild serpents, and other such animals.
That evening We did our evening meditation in our rooms, and then came to the common kitchen for the night meals. Those days I usually kept doing japa and would occasionally come across some great 'Trans-like' experiences also.
It was about 9:00 p.m. On the ground / floor of the kitchen, she was sitting before me on my right and I on her left. I had finished my meals already, and was just waiting for her to finish hers.
Suddenly I felt the whole atmosphere undergoing a tremendous change. She was just busy with her meals. We both were silent. Then I 'saw' in some subtle plane that 'devI' (Mother Goddes) was coming to us. I could just have the sense of 'vibrations' around in the surroundings. I felt, devI would soon be there before us, within the next minute. I was not at all scared, but felt, She (Mother Goddess) was riding on the Tiger's back. I had no fear of tiger either, but was not sure if Madhu didi could or couldn't face devI and Her Tiger. So just to help her in case she may not faint down and have such a life-time experience / vision, I whispered :
"didi, mAtAjI may be here any moment, so please have heart and don't panic, I am telling just in case you could not stay the vision, and I am with you here."
But I was disappointed to see that Madhu didi could not even hear my words. She was very frightened. Then she somehow finished hastily her meals. And within the next two minutes the whole atmosphere suddenly underwent a dramatic change. I felt, as if the Mother Goddess, in the last moments decided to not come before us. The whole atmosphere was again dark as it was a few minutes ago when I had first sensed Her arrival.
After some ten minutes, when I wanted to go up-stairs to my room for retiring, Madhu didi said;
"tumane mujhe darA diyA, ab mai akele yahAn nahIn raha pAuungI."
tum Aj yahIn so jaao. There was a bed outside her room.
I sensed it was futile to argue with her, and said o.k.
When after a half an hour when I saw her entering her room, I feigned asleep. When I felt she must have slept and no more awake, I called her to check if she is really lost in deep sleep. She didn't reply. I stealthily, without making a noise, left for my room up-stairs.
When in the next morning I woke up about 3:45, I came down just to check if she was o.k. She was still asleep, snoring.
When at around 5:45 I again came down, she was still sleeping. And as it was my duty to prepare the morning tea, I took some big dry sagaun leaves, lit the fire in the chulhA and put the kettle upon it.
After a while the day began as usual.
This is because you wanted to see 'uma'.
It is not easy to have Her 'darshan' without a great fortune, and even if you eventually come upon such a chance by Her Grace, may be you yourself would get so frightened that you would not have courage for the same.
And this is a true story.
And The vision that I had of 'uma' was a distant one, though immensely Great.
I would like to add here that during those days Madhu didi used to do an elaborate anuShThAna of some kind, of ShrI-yantra sadhanA./ ShrI-vidyA sAdhanA. And she had also witnessed some mystic experiences which she attributed to my presence.
Blessings.

Q : BhagavAn, ye kathA Apne mujhe pahle bhI sunAI thee!
--
Me : Really there is nothing to be fear about a darshana. You often visit those Gods / Goddesses in dreams. What is the difference? When our mind crosses over from one state of consciousness to another, it is difficult to stay aware of this change. When from the waking state we (our consciousness, mind) enter the dream state, usually this is a smooth transition of state. We first forget all about our surroundings. Then some memory comes up on the screen of our mind and our attention gets centered to it. Then another state is there and our imaginations, fears desires, hopes, swing into play and we get easily accommodated. When the dream ends because of whatsoever reason, we don't feel scared, May be we feel sad or happy but hardly we feel frightened, because we know that it was a dream only.
The same thing happens when we meditate upon some God / Goddess, His mantra, name or image. That too happens in such a way that first our attention is removed from the surroundings and gets focused on the God / Goddess, mantra, or the image. This is again a smooth transition of attention from this waking level to that mental level.
But when this happens all of a sudden and sometimes without our knowing, we are not prepared and that feeling results in a sense of fear. We only know we are afraid, but don't know why! We only know that something is going to happen to 'me' but not, 'what'.
So, this happens with every-one.
While thinking of God / Goddess, we accept and imagine the things according to our convenience. But when we actually face them in trans-like / samadhi-like state, They sometimes show us their Real form which may be quite different than our imagined forms of them.
So it is easy to say; "I want to see shiva / uma / ganesha , .. but when the real thing happens it may be a frightening experience. So this needs great love and willingness to be able to have darshana of the God.
Blessings !!

After some ten minutes, when I wanted to go up-stairs to my room for retiring, Madhu didi said;
"tumane mujhe darA diyA, ab mai akele yahAn nahIn raha pAuungI."
tum Aj yahIn so jaao.

WHAT APPEARS AS 'HAPPENED' IS ILLUSION.
WHAT APPEARS TO HAPPEN 'ANY-WHERE' IN 'ANY FUTURE' IS ILLUSION.
WHAT APPEARS TO BE 'HAPPENING' IN THE MOMENT, IS ILLUSION.
FOR 'WHAT IS', IS JUST SO, NEVER HAPPENED, NEITHER 'HAPPENING', NOR 'WILL HAPPEN' IN TIME, AS IS PERCEIVED IN OUR IMAGINATION. THIS 'TIME' IS NOT A SENSORY PERCEPTION, BUT THE MENTAL CONSTRUCTION OF AN IDEA. THE "IDEA" HAS NO REALITY. 'WHAT IS', AND NOT 'WHAT IS' THE IMAGINED AS PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE AS SEEM TO HAPPEN, TO TAKE PLACE.
THIS VERY BODY IS ILLUSION, WHERE-IN AN IMAGINARY WORLD SEEMS TO HAVE TAKEN PLACE. BUT BECAUSE ONE CAN'T EXIST INDEPENDENTLY WITHOUT THE OTHER, BOTH ARE JUST INDIVISIBLE WHOLE.
THIS VERY BODY IS THE WORLD AND THE WORLD IS VERILY THIS VERY BODY ONLY.
THIS VERY BODY IS BODHA, BUDDHA, THE ONE WHO KNOWS THIS.
