© Vinay Vaidya.
Days were passing in silence.
The very being was suffused by it. You had not
invited it, it came to you in its own way, you
could neither invite it nor turn it away from you.
You had just been aware of the functioning of the
mind. How it moves in grooves, set patterns. How
your attention was driven to your mind was something
you can never know. But it happened. You were going
on the walk as usual and were a bit tired, sad. That's
all. You were expecting nothing. Just vaccum were you.
You were going along the narrow road, where traffic
at this hour was very low, only a car, or some vehicles
passed through occasionally, and you walked without
bothering about them. The sky was blue and clear, and
there were a few clouds around the sun.
A silence was within, and another outside.
They often merged into one-another, and one could
not distinguish between the two, but while writing this,
one 'becomes' 'some-one'.
Yet another, self-subsisting, self-sustaining myth.
When the thought talks about it, thought conjures-up
it, and takes it as a reality, subjective as well objective
at the same time while thought crawls like a snake,
scared of its own shadow, that lurks in the light of
consciousness, in the back-ground of the silence that is
outer and that is inner, or the words 'outer' and 'inner'
no more apply to it. A light, a silence, that thought can
neither perceive, nor grasp.
Thought springs-up in the brain like a tiny seedling,
and becomes a fully developed giant tree, nay, a forest,
with its own flora and fauna. It all takes place in a whiff
of a moment that thought itself gives birth to. Thought
can but sure see the shadow, its own image, and the 'one',
that has 'become' 'some-one', falls a prey to it, -the myth.
The myth that grows beyond unseemly dimensions, unseen
horizons, yet strongly tethered to the thought. It is always
frightened of the explosion that might occur any moment,
and annihilate it to nothing. Explosion is as certain as the
'writing on the wall'.
But the Silence prevailed, and nothing could stir it from
its vibrant stillness. It breathed through the inner and through
the outer. It knew nothing about the thought and its plight,
yet thought always played on its lap. Thought owned its own
separate existence as a myth. Thought, the myth survived and
kept growing. The two movements were altogether unknown
to one-another.
You carried on the routine work, the daily chores.
The evening and morning walks, unknown to every one, yet
no one was unknown to you, though you never knew their
names, thoughts and feelings. They were people just like you,
All were the mighty silence, which thought could possibly touch
not. For thought could hardly sense it.
You were in a courtship. Day in, and day out.
________________________
And one day the thought exploded all of a sudden, in a quite
unexpected moment, which was not of thought, which was never
thought of.
The Silence prevailed, breathing through the inner and breathing
through the outer.

"Everything is illusion."
She kind of proclaimed.
She was sitting comfortably on the sofa-chair,
sipping her coffee with me.
She was my friend, class-fellow in my college-days.
At that time we lived in a proverbial 'sleepy-town',
where her father was some government official.
My father was a retired Principal of the local (M.P.
Government conducted) Higher Secondary School.
She had no problem with English Medium during
college years, but I had to lose an year in trying to
cope-up with the English language. And then we were
in the same class in the second year of our graduation
Now, some 30 years after she 're-discovered' me,
through a social-networking site, though when we were
class-fellow, we hardly spoke to one-another. It was
the custom in those days.
She called me two days ago and expressed her wish
to see me.
Today she was here in my drawing-room.We talked
about so many things, She made coffee for us, and as
I had been always single, she made it a point, like an
traditional 'Indian-woman', to do the kitchen work
herself, when we were together. She could not see me
working, and allowing herself sitting 'idle'; comfortably.
Then we said good-bye, and she left.
~~
The very next day she came once more, without giving
a call.
The sky was cloudy, and as yesterday, she again made
coffee, and we were sitting in my drawing-room, trying
to re-live those days, which were nowhere now. Soon
we realized it was just absurd. We decided to talk about
something else. She got a book of J.Krishnamurti, and
started shuffling through the pages.
"Everything is illusion." She exclaimed, like yesterday.
We were silent for the next five minutes.
Today, the sky was overcast, and it looked like the
evening would be dark. In between, though the Sun
peeped in through some holes in the cloudy cover, that
was hiding him.The clouds were running in hurry-flurry,
overlapping others, and hiding themselves, their kins,
then coming again in the sight.
There was only one, or they were one or many, no one
could tell. A single entity, that sometimes acquired a plural
's', and became many. Let us say, appeared before us as
'many'. They mingled into one another, acquired strange
and fantastic shapes and forms, and yet in every kind, they
again acquired a new fresh 'identity'. They looked majestic,
timid, aggressive, humble, monstrous or dwarfs, One could
swallow his brethren in a flash, like the fish, who are born,
live and die in waters. It seems, the fish must have got this
propensity from waters, in the same way perhaps, as the
waters, from the clouds, May be the contrary. Nevertheless
they all share this quality.
Appearances acquire name, form, and 'continuity' in the
mind. They are inseparable. Name and the form, form and
the 'name', name and the 'continuity', 'continuity' and the
'name', form and the 'continuity', 'continuity' and the 'form'.
They all share with each other, like water, fish and cloud.
~~
She was not very beautiful, but was attractive in those days,
or I felt so. Around 20, and I was / am some six or seven
months older to her. But just that much, we had no reason,
nor a chance to get acquainted, and I never knew what she
had in her mind about me. Most probably, -nothing, what-so
ever. Sometimes our eyes met, but I felt, nothing stirred in her
.....she always returned a blank look.
~~
Today, she was in her later fifties, about 57, and I, 57 plus 6
or 7months. Those 6 or7 months.
~~
She appeared as much attractive as she was, when we were
class-mates. Something (Destiny? ) brought us together again
even closer, after so many (30plus years). Then 'Destiny' is
too a concept, an assumed 'name', an assumed abstract form,
an assumed 'continuity', and is 'given' an apparent 'existence'.
At your mercy,....!
~~
"I think there is no illusion, there are 'appearances', and the
appearances acquire 'name', 'form' and 'continuity'. Accepting
those appearances as reality is the only cause of assumed /
apparent illusion. If we don't let the name, the form, and their
assumed continuity possess our mind, and don't get beguiled
by them, even the so-called 'illusion' comes to nought."
-I replied.
She was looking intently into my eyes, She was listening to
my every word with keen attention. She was in fact silent,
when she had no idea in her mind, no concept or comment
or argument to counter me.
I realized in a moment, she had been with J. Krishnamurti
during all those past years, when we were no more in touch.
She gave a faint smile, but said nothing.
"I had been waiting for you since last few years when I had
heard about you."
-A minute later, She said in a firm voice.
"Waiting for another illusion?",
- I looked at her face .
"No, I was ready to cast aside all illusions, but had no insight,
how this happens, and felt, may be you have such an insight,
and help me."
She thanked me, lovingly took my hands into hers, and lightly,
delicately she took me into her arms, put delicately her lips on
my cheek, like a mature lady, again like a Graceful, 'Elderly',
'Indian-lady'.
(Motherly ?....just guess,...!)
We left the room, walked up to the gate, where she had parked
her scooty. We said good-bye, and I stood for a while there,
when she started her two-wheeler, and waived her hand in the
air.
She returned never there-after.

e to me
show details 7:46 PM (13 hours ago)
7:24 PM
me: Hi,...!
e: hi
me: yesterday I wrote this one :
Some-one becomes silent.
It is a state,
Which comes and goes away.
Some-one else is silence.
He remains so,
Even if he talks silently,
Thinks aloud,
Or is just silent.
Remaining as silence only,
He transcends 'becoming'.
He neither comes nor goes away.
7:25 PM
e: great
7:26 PM
me: Om Namah Shivaaya !
e: u r so excellent writer
har har mahadev
7:27 PM
me: but I thought your silence may be disturbed
by my words, if I send this,
so I didn't send yesterday !
e: no
it will not
ur presence or ur talk never displace me from silence.
7:28 PM
even when u talk or i talk to u while talking i remain silent
i dont know how it happens n what the science behind it
but i remain in the same state.
7:29 PM
me: do you know the silence, which remains unaffected
by whatsoever happens to the body, mind or the world around ?
7:30 PM
e: yeah it is the observer which remain silent while observing
everything.
7:31 PM
me: does this observer comes or goes away, does it have a
birth or death?
e: it doesn't matter what happen with body n mind it is just
silent.
no
it does not
goes n come
7:32 PM
neither take birth n died
7:33 PM
me: great. I just trust you, because this thing is so rare,...
and shall it remain there always or after some years or
days will be replaced by the normal mind that becomes
happy or sad, fearful or brave, anxious or worried ?
7:35 PM
e: being happy and sad or fearful or brave,... is a state of
mind.
7:36 PM
not the state of the observer
me: And how it is related to you ? Is it your child or the
Self , or something else ?
e: when mind observes the observer it becomes silent.
7:37 PM
neither happy nor sad.
it is not my child.
it is Self.
it is Intelligence
7:38 PM
me: O.K. it means the mind will get consumed by it,
and as long as the mind 'is', this play will continue.
Then some day, the mind will be exhausted.
e: yes
me: And what of you then ?
7:39 PM
e: i m the observer
mind body thoughts;
-they are like layers over the observer.
7:40 PM
to continue the dream of shiva once we get
known with this truth
we get in shiva
7:41 PM
me: Let all other things that are not observer,
i.e. body, mind and their functions,
dissolve / merge into the observer.
Yes.
You realize you are Shiva only.
e: shall talk on mobile
7:42 PM
me: just now ?
e: yes.
me: i have no balance, but let me call you with
the land line, what is your number?
7:43 PM
or you may call through your landline.
7:46 PM
o.k. bye !

~~Ashtavakra-3.~~
~~~~~~~~~~~ ASHTAVAKRA-3 ~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~अष्टावक्र-3~~~~~~~~~~~~~
________________________
************************
Ashtavakra Gita (अष्टावक्र गीता / अष्टावक्र संहिता) ( or
as sometimes it is called 'Ashtavakra Samhita' also)
inculcates the essence of the highest knowledge of
Advata. It deals with the actual realization of the
eternal Atman (Self), which is not something that
dawns only when this world is renounced ; or when
it does not exist or ceases to be perceived as when
one is said to go to another sphere after death ; or
when one is in yogic samadhi ; or when one is other-
wise unconscious as in deep sleep. But it is attained
in the highest stage when one is in the very midst of
the world, perceiving or the feeling the objects in it,
even as King Janaka while actually ruling his kingdom,
did attain, following the teachings of Rishi Ashtavakra.
"Seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, eating, taking,
speaking and walking, the great-souled one, free from
all efforts and non-efforts, is verily emancipated."
(XVII,12.)
"The wise one who lives on happily doing what comes
to one to be done, does not feel troubled either in
activity or inactivity."
(XVIII,20.)
"For the wise man there is nothing to be renounced
nor accepted nor destroyed."
(VI, 4.)
"The man of Knowledge lives like other men of the
world."
(XVIII, 18.)
"Only those like him can understand him." (XVIII, 18.)"
Such a person ever feels his oneness with the ALL.
"The man of knowledge does not feel any desire for
the dissolution of the universe or aversion to its
existence."
(XVII, 7.)
In fact, the highest knower (Jnanin) realizes at all
times that whatever exists is nothing but his very self,
the Atman or Brahman.
Ashtavakra further furnishes the key to the means
of attaining this supreme knowledge in the words "As
one thinks, so one becomes."
(I, 10).
But the steps, as may be gathered from the following
verses, require the hardest and the most patient efforts
to climb Till the ego "I" is effaced, the Truth cannot be
known.
(VIII, 4. XVI, 10 and XVIII, 73.)
If you desire liberation ( from the bondage of
ignorance), my child, shun the objects of senses like
poison, and seek forgiveness, sincerity, kindness,
contentment and truth like nectar."
(I, 1.)
"In whatever you perceive you alone appear.
Completely give up all such distinctions as 'I am He'
and 'I am not this.'
Consider all as thy self."
(XV, 15.)
"The man of ignorance does not attain peace either
by action or by inaction. The wise becomes happy by
merely ascertaining the Truth."
(XVIII, 34.)

Lightening Upadesha to one on a stirrup.
___________________________________
***********************************
Once upon a time King Janaka was listening to a
Philosophical Treatise being read out to him by the State
Pundit. He came across a passage which said that when
a man had placed one foot upon the stirrup and before he
lifted himself to place the other foot on the other stirrup,
realization would be complete. This means that realisation
is so sudden and quick. Then Janaka desired his Pundit to
stop and asked him if a horse might be brought in, to prove
the statement. The Pundit admitted his inability to impart the
practical wisdom. The king suggested that the text is either
false or exaggerated. The Pundit would not admit it.Though
himself not able to impart practical wisdom, the text could
not be false or exaggerated, because the words were those
of the wise sages of the past. Janaka was irritated and had
him imprisoned. He further similarly challenged every-one
who passed for a wise man and imprisoned them all. About
this time there lived a sage by name Ashtavakra (a man of 8
bodily deformities). He was young and was roaming about in
the country. He happened to be in Janaka's territory and
there two men passed him on the way. He enquired of them
whose country it was and what the king did. They were some
of those, who were terribly afraid of Janaka's challenge and
imprisonment, and in their despair told him that Janaka was
the king of the country, and he was rather irritated and harsh
upon those Pundits who could not explain to him a scriptural
text. Ashtavakra immediately offered to explain the text and
release the Pundits. They were impressed by his assurance
and took him in a palanquin to the palace. The king was in the
Court Hall and at the sight of the sage he stood up and saluted
him with great reverence. Ashtavakra asked the king why he
should imprison the Pundits ? King Janaka told him the reason.
Ashtavakra said : "Release them all".
Janaka thought that this suggestion could only proceed from
one who would be able to clear his doubts. So he ordered to
release all those imprisoned Pundits immediately, and asked
Ashtavakra if now he might have a horse brought, then and
there, and might be imparted the realisation, as is mentioned
in the scripture.
The sage warned the king not to be hasty. Brahma-Jnana
should be imparted only in solitude and not in a Court Hall.
Janaka offered to go into solitude with him. Then a Palanquin
was brought for Ashtavakra and Janaka rode beside him with
a retinue following them. When they reached the outskirts of a
forest the sage asked that the King should order the retinue go
back and that they must be left alone. So was it done. Again,
Janaka requested Brahma-Jnana, put one foot on the stirrup
and was anxiously praying his Master. The sage told him : "Wait,
in the same scripture you should have known that Brahma-Jnana
is imparted by a Guru to his shishya (disciple). Are we in such a
relationship ?" asked Ashtavakra. Janaka then made obeisance
to him and submitted to become his disciple and prayed to be
taught. Ashtavakra then told him that a proper disciple should
surrender himself, his possessions and all, to his Master,
before being taught Brahma Jnana. Janaka surrendered all; then
Ashtavakra said :"Well".
Janaka became dazed.
Ashtavakra disappeared from the scene.
Janaka was standing there statue-like, where he was.
Time passed-by. It was getting dusk; the citizens were awaiting
the return of Janaka but found no sign of his approach. They
grew anxious and began to search for him. They came to the
place where Janaka was still standing. He was unaware of their
presence and would not answer any of their enquiries. They were
sorry to find the King in that condition. The ministers looked out
for Janaka's companion, Ashtavakra, but could not find him. They
thought he must be a charlatan who has worked some spell upon
their king. They vowed vengeance on him. They were, however,
concerned with the king's condition and they wanted to minister
to their king. They placed him on a palanquin and returned to the
city. The king continued to be in the same condition. He was
later placed on a bed and many were anxiously waiting on him
the whole night.Finding him continue in the same dazed state, the
ministers sent out search parties for bringing Ashtavakra to the
palace in order that he might be induced to remove the spell from
the king. Ashtavakra was brought to the palace, by night-fall, by
one of the search parties. The minister was wild at his sight but
still suppressed his anger and requested the sage to bring back
the King Janaka to his normal condition.
At the same time the minister charged the sage with responsibility
for the present state of the king. Ashtavakra simply smiled at all
this harangue and told the minister to ask the king himself. The
minister professed his inability to make the king respond.
Ashtavakra said :
"Is that so ? Let me see". Saying so he called out ;
"Janaka !"
Immediately Janaka saluted him and replied :
"Lord !" The ministers were surprised.
Ashtavakra said :
"Look, Janaka ! I am being charged by the people here as having
brought you to this sad plight. Tell them if it is so."
Janaka was furious and asked in a rage :
"Who was it that said so ?"
The ministers began to tremble but still continued to request the
sage to bring the king back to the normal condition. The sage told
them to retire and leave him alone with the king. They did so.
The sage told the king :
" Now Janaka ! Why are you like this ? You must be as others are
and should not behave differently from the normal condition."
Janaka said : "I am yours Oh Lord !
I can act up only to your orders."
Ashtavakra continued :
"Brahma Jnana can be taught to competent persons only. I have
been all along testing your competence.Take your food first and
then we will continue the discussion."
Janaka finished his meal and then prayed :
"How can I realise Brahman and be liberated?"
Ashtavakra said :
"Brahman is not new or apart from you. No particular time or
place is needed to realise Brahman.
That Thou art. That is the Self, eternal and infinite."
In this way the whole night passed when the sage was elucidating
'Ashtavakra Gita'.
The next morning when the ministers came on a visit to the king,
they found him quite all right, and were happy. They thanked the
sage. The king called the assembly and was at his work as usual.
He performed his functions normally.
In the assembled court Ashtavakra said to the king :
"O King, formerly you had some doubt if Brahma Jnana could
be had as suddenly and quickly as mentioned in the scriptures
and you wondered if the text was correct. Now tell your men
how you feel.
Bring the horse here and demonstrate the truth of it."
The King was all humility now and said :
"Oh Lord, I was mistaken then. I have myself to blame. Because
of my immaturity I doubted the correctness of the scriptural text.
O ! every letter of it is true !".

02062011.
Dear ......e,
I am mailing this piece that I wrote just now.
I wanted to write about 'destiny' and wrote-up this !!
But a few lines about your q.
1. 'Destiny' as a concept or reality ?
All the causes are pre-existing, predetermined.
The moment of 'now' is the final consequence of those
innumerable causes. And the same is true for all the future,
consecutive moments.
In that way everything is meticulously pre-determined.
You have asked :
"'who' or 'what determines this ?"
Is your question valid ?
2. ' Who' is affected / influenced by 'Destiny' ?
A human being, a situation, an event,...?
Obviously, there is 'some-one' who has a 'destiny', who
comments about a situation, event or their 'sum' as in his /
her mind. This comment is an effort of translating the
'Reality', into the framework of 'thought'.'Thought' thus
'comments', and imposes upon one the illusion of 'Destiny',
sorrow, failure, success, ...etc. Even a 'self'.
3.So there is a ground and support for thought (consciousness?)
that is the only Reality, in the true sense.
_________________________
The Existence.
Is Totality.
The objective and the subjective Reality.
Something or some-one may or may not 'exist',But the
objective Reality and subjective Reality is it's own irrefutable
evidence. We are saying 'objective' / 'subjective', only for the
sake of conversation. There is always a 'being', a 'living' body,
which is to be accepted and can't be denied to 'exist', before
we can talk of anything. There is a 'living' body . And 'living'
implies it is endowed with 'consciousness', that is the faculty
that enables the body to grasp 'information' about itself and
the surroundings. Obviously, this 'consciousness' may be a
result of chemical reactions, that bring into 'existence' a certain
'organism' (biological cell ?), or even prior to that, where-in
the chemical reactions take place and are 'perceived' in the
'consciousness'. Whatever be the case, There is always a
'consciousness' associated with a 'living' body, and the 'living'
implies 'consciousness' ; 'consciousness' implies living.
__________________
What about plant-life?
Obviously, every plant and flora, have an intrinsic 'programming',
that unfolds during it's growth. This 'programming' is a of course
a very complex yet very systematic, in fact precisely perfect in
it's own way. External circumstances force upon them in some
way, but not this very basic intrinsic 'information'. The plant, as
an organism responds to, and reacts to surrounding conditions.
And again the surrounding enviroment also 'conditions' it's 'life'.
__________________
What about animal-life ?
... ... ...
So 'consciousness' that is associated with a body is always kind
of 'conditioned' by the extrnal circumstances, whether in a plant,
animal, or even a human body.
Therefore 'mind' as such is always a collective 'final' effect of
innumerable external effects upon the 'consciousness' associated
with a body. These effects form the basis and framework of
'memory', that comes into 'being' remains for the life-time and
finally must end-up with the dissolution of the body, when the
body along-with the 'memory', becomes extinct.
